History - used for thousands of years in the East as a medicine and incense. 
In the West best known in the form of tincture of benzoin, or Friars Balsam, and used for respiratory complaints.

Odour - Intensely rich. warm, sweet-balsamic.

Uses - As an inhalation for sore throats and loss of voice; it is stimulating as well as soothing, helps in clearing mucus and stimulates the circulation. Useful for many skin problems, including healing cracked and chapped hands and chilblains.
Often used in hand creams for people working outdoors along with lemon, lavender or chamomile.
It is a warming soothing and stimulating oil for those who are depressed, anxious, sad or lonely.
  
Blends well with - cypress, frankincense, ginger, lemon, lavender, rose, sandalwood.

Safety - Non-toxic, non-irritant but possible sensitiser.
